BATTERED SPOUSE NOW ELIGIBLE FOR GREEN CARDPublished: Jan 23, 2006 9:55 am By: Matthew L. Kolken Source: My Source
Matthew L. Kolken, Esq. obtained the approval of a Battered Spouse Petition, on behalf of his client, a native of Finland, and a citizen of Sweden. Mr. Kolken’s client originally came to the United States as a student. She met and fell in love with a man, who after their marriage, became physically, mentally, and sexually abusive to her, and who repeatedly threatened her life if she were to attempt to leave him. Her husband was a trained sniper in the U.S Armed Forces, and she took his threats very seriously.
The abuser refused to sponsor her for a green card because he would not allow her to work, and because she had no legal status in the United States, he threatened her with deportation should she not obey him. After summoning the courage to leave her husband, she escaped to a woman’s shelter, and instituted divorce proceedings based on the cruelty she suffered by the hand of her abuser.
The Battered Spouse Petition was approved in six months, and now allows Mr. Kolken’s client to apply for her Green Card.
