DREAMer Elier Lara no longer facing deportationPublished: Jul 15, 2011 7:00 am
The Immigration Court in Buffalo, New York has signed an order dismissing removal proceedigns against my client, Elier Lara. Elier's case obtained national prominence when a poster sized picture of him was placed on the floor of the Senate by Senator Durbin when he reintroduced the DREAM Act last month.
Prior to Senator Durbin's actions, the Obama Administration was unwilling to do anything to help Elier fight off deportation, and local DHS attorneys were specifically precluded by Washington from joining in a motion to dismiss.
After Senator Durbin got involved the Administration's tune changed dramatically, and local DHS attorneys were permitted to reached out to me, offering to draft a motion for dismissal. The Immigration Judge in Buffalo, New York signed the order late last week.
