The Math of Immigration Detention: "The Department of Homeland Security’s immigration detention program, operated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”), will cost taxpayers over $1.7 billion during FY 2010. The $1.7 billion budget for “Custody Operations” provides ICE with funding to maintain its current detention capacity of 33,400 people in over 500 facilities on any given night, including operational expenses.1 Two figures are used in calculating the average daily cost of immigration detention per person: $99 per bed2, and $141 per bed, including ICE’s operational expenses."
