Mercedes-Benz Executive Arrested under Alabama Immigration Law

The unlikely poster child for the new Alabama immigration law isn't even hispanic.  Detlev Hager, a citizen of Germany, was stopped while driving the streets of Tuscaloosa because his rental car was missing a tag.  Once pulled over the police officer demanded (queue Nazi accent) "papers please."

The sweet irony, once it hits your lips, it's so good!

Hager was only carrying his German ID card, which is a violation of the new State immigration law that requires everyone in Alabama, citizen or not, to carry valid identification at all times.  Hager was taken into custody, and was released only after his passport, visa and German driver's license were retrieved from his hotel by another Mercedes employee.

The current Alabama State motto is: "Audemus jura nostra defendere -- We Dare Defend Our Rights."

Maybe it's time for a change.  I'm thinking something like: "Visa, don't leave home without it."
